Maine Historical Society collection relating to Henry Dearborn, 1968 and undated.

Photocopy of typescript copy (10 p.), of extract of Henry Dearborn's memorandum book, entitled, "Sketches of the characters of sundry officers of the Army of the Revolution," along with t.l.s. (12 Sept. 1968; on Maine Historical Society letterhead), from Roger B. Ray, treasurer of the Maine Historical Society, to the editor of the Maine Sunday Telegram. In 1968, the original memorandum book was held at the Chicago Historical Society. Henry Dearborn, a Revolutionary War veteran, enlisted as captain in 1775, he then served as major and lieutenant-colonel of the 3rd New Hampshire, and lieutenant-colonel and colonel of the 1st New Hampshire regiment.

The 3rd New Hampshire regiment was created after Nov. 1776 and served until January 1781 when its remaining men were incorporated into the 1st New Hampshire. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
