Gerrit Van Zyl graduated from Hope College in 1918. In 1920 he graduated from the University of Michigan with a masters degree in chemistry and physics. In 1909 Wichers graduated from Hope College and was appointed instructor in English and Latin at Hope Preparatory School. In 1913 he became professor of history at Hope College.
