Jesse Martin (J.M.) Hitt was an early Hitt family researcher. This collection contains the research, correspondence and genealogy tables that were compiled by Jesse Martin (J.M.) Hitt. The bulk of the collection consists of the genealogy tables and correspondence researching the Hitt family. It includes many letters of inquiry to different people around the country about the Hitt family. J.M. Hitt was the State Librarian for the Washington State Library. This collection contains some of his personal and professional correspondence. There are letters of introduction from 1911 while he was thinking about looking for another position; there are canceled checks and a bank account from Jan. 1919 & Jan. 1920. There is an oval framed drawing of the Rev. Martin Hitt, born in 1763 and died about 1832 and a couple of other small photographs. Around 1931 the collection was given to Mr. & Mrs. Henry C. Hitt of Bremerton, WA. There had been an inquiry at Washington State Library (WSL) about 1963 about the collection of genealogy. WSL contacted Mrs. Henry C. Hitt to inquire what had happened to the collection. She responded that after her husband passed away, she had sent it to her son, John C. Hitt, in Cohasset, MA. She and her son exchanged numerous letters and it was discovered that the collection was still with her at her home in Bremerton. WA. This information came from a letter dated Jan. 14, 1964. A few weeks later it appears that the collection was brought to WSL and was donated by Mrs. Henry C. Hitt.

Maud P. Mitchell was born about 1883 in Oregon. She married Chas. R. Mitchell and by 1920 they were living in Chehalis, WA. Charles was an assistant cashier at the bank. Charles had become a banker by 1930. Between 1957 & 1958 Charles passed away. And Maud passed away on 29 May 1960 in Chehalis, WA. Jesse Martin (J.M.) Hitt was born to Caleb & Ann (Shilmire) Hitt in 1854. His guardianship was awarded to his aunt Maria, and her husband, Rev. Aaron Wood, on 28 June 1864 after the death of his parents. The guardianship was awarded in Putnam County, IN. A Civil War pension for a minor was awarded to him as well.
