Jesse Martin (J.M.) Hitt was born to Caleb & Ann (Shilmire) Hitt in 1854. His guardianship was awarded to his aunt Maria, and her husband, Rev. Aaron Wood, on 28 June 1864 after the death of his parents. The guardianship was awarded in Putnam County, IN. A Civil War pension for a minor was awarded to him as well. Hitt graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut with the class of 1876, and received his master's degree in 1879. Hitt taught and published in the East. About 1890 Hitt had moved to Washington State where he held the position of city and county superintendent of schools of Bellingham and Port Townsend, WA. On February 1, 1905 he was appointed Washington State Librarian. He served in this position for 26 years until he passed away in 1931. About 1911, Hitt must have been considering a change of jobs because there are at least 6 letters of reference in the collection. In 1905 he organized the state's librarians and the Washington Library Association (WLA) was formed. He was the first president of the organization. During his life, he was very active in many organizations. He had been the director of the National Educational Association from 1883-1885; President of WLA, 1905; President and pioneer member of the National Association of State Libraries, 1921; vestryman in the Episcopal Church for 50 yrs. He loved roses and had over 100 varieties in his garden. He organized the Olympia Flower Society and was the president for several years. On January 9, 1931 he passed away at his home in Olympia, WA. He was survived by his wife and two sons.
