The collection includes instructions and orders issued to the consuls by the Spanish government; correspondence of the consuls (including letters of Albert Gallatin, John Marshall, Wilson Cary Nicholas, Samuel Lewis Southard, Littleton Waller Tazewell, St. George Tucker, Abel Parker Upshur, and William Wirt); accounts; and materials concerning various Spanish ships and commerce with the United States. Some letters concern cholera and lead mines in Virginia. Also includes a letterbook, 1817-1827, kept by Pablo Chacon as consul; materials concerning lawsuits involving Spanish litigants; and a list of ships, 1839-1841.
