Collection consists of correspondence, classroom and outside lectures, and miscellaneous writings documenting Lanyi's career as a teacher and researcher of political science (1947-1980). The bulk of the material consists of coursework material (lecture notes, outlines, reading lists, examinations) pertaining to his teaching. Courses include comparative communist systems, internal Soviet politics, and the Middle East.

George A. Lanyi was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1913. In 1937 he earned a B. Sc. in economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He received the M.A. (1941) and Ph. D. (1949) from Harvard University. A specialist in international relations and comparative governmental systems, Lanyi served as a regional expert on Hungary and Yugoslavia in the Office of War Information (OWI) in Washington, D.C. from 1943 to 1945.
