Records, 1975-1987.

The collection consists chiefly of minutes, correspondence, financial records, maps, and printed items detailing the history of the Fifth Street Merchants Association from 1975-79. The correspondence sheds light on the relationship between the association and city officials in developing the Golden Block. Included are exchanges between Association president, Candida R. González, and Dane Wells, manager of the Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization Division of the Philadelphia Citywide Development Corporation, concerning off-street parking, storefront improvements, and small business loans. The materials also document the organization's efforts in lobbying for better police protection and street repairs.
