Cole's personal, legal, political, and financial papers, 1836-1862. Included are letters and papers of his father Albert. Political correspondents include U.S. congressmen Daniel R. Bearss, Graham N. Fitch, and S.C. Sample. Many of Cole's papers deal with the Miami Nation of Indians, their removal from Indiana, and property claims. The main correspondent is George W. Ewing, a trader. Also included is the estate of Frances Slocum, 1846. Cole's legal career is represented with legal papers, especially civil law cases involving estates, land, rights-of-way, and personal property. Included are Cole's dockets from the Miami County Circuit Court. Cole's government-related materials include bills, resolutions, petitions, and addresses. Topics include the needs of Miami County and annexing Canada to the U.S. His financial records include his interests in a canal boat and the Horse Thief Detective Agency. Also included are items regarding the founding of St. James Episcopal Church in Peru.

A native of New York, Bearss moved west with his family to Ohio and Michigan before coming to Indiana in 1828. Bearss worked in various mercantile businesses in northern Indiana before moving to Peru, Miami County, in 1834. Samuel Caldwell Sample was born in Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland on 15 August 1796. He attended rural school, and learned the trade of carpenter. The family moved to Connersville, Indiana around 1823, where Samuel studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and practiced in South Bend, Indiana where he was also elected prosecuting attorney and a judge. Cole was born near Oberlin, Ohio and moved to Peru, Ind. in 1834. He studied civil engineering and was Miami County surveyor 1840-1841. He then studied law and began practicing in 1843. Cole served two terms (1846, 1848) in the Indiana House of Representatives as a member of the Whig Party. He married in 1850 and fathered 3 children.
