Cole was born near Oberlin, Ohio and moved to Peru, Ind. in 1834. He studied civil engineering and was Miami County surveyor 1840-1841. He then studied law and began practicing in 1843. Cole served two terms (1846, 1848) in the Indiana House of Representatives as a member of the Whig Party. He married in 1850 and fathered 3 children. Due to failing health, he retired in 1854 to his farm outside Peru, where he died.
