Sydney Nettleton Fisher was born in 1906 in Warsaw, New York. He received the A.B. degree in economics (1928) and the M.A. in history (1932) from Oberlin College. He earned the Ph. D. degree in history at the University of Illinois in 1935 and pursued post-doctoral studies at Princeton University and the University of Brussels under grants from the American Council of Learned Societies.
