Sydney Nettleton Fisher was born in 1906 in Warsaw, New York. He received the A.B. degree in economics (1928) and the M.A. in history (1932) from Oberlin College. He earned the Ph. D. degree in history at the University of Illinois in 1935 and pursued post-doctoral studies at Princeton University and the University of Brussels under grants from the American Council of Learned Societies. From 1929 to 1931, Fisher taught at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1937, he joined the history faculty at the Ohio State University as Instructor in History and rose to a full professorship in 1955. He retired in 1972. Fisher was the author of The Middle East: a history; The Foreign relations of Turkey; Evolution of the Middle East; and Social forces in the Middle East. He died December 10, 1987.
