Autograph letter signed, dated : Lucerne, 18 July 1868, to [Heinrich Esser?], 1868 July 18.

Saying that Hölzl [i.e. Gustav Hölzel] told him that he would probably sing Beckmesser [in Die Meistersinger] in Vienna, criticizing Hölzel's interpretation of the role--Beckmesser is not a comic: only his position and the situations into which he gets himself make him look ridiculous--, saying that Hölzel simply does not want to change his characterization, adding that for Vienna he will accept a comic [actor] only if he is capable of projecting passionate seriousness, mentioning Mitterwurzer, etc.
