Page proofs of "From here to eternity" contain unpublished text. Not intended for general circulation, the very small advance issue was recalled by the publisher. This copy may be the only one extant and was formerly the property of Christopher Morley. The proof contains the complete text of the novel and is significantly longer than the published version, which was cut heavily. With the proof are two explanatory letters from Matthew J. Bruccoli to John Cook Wyllie and Clifton Waller Barrett denying Jones's own assertion that the proofs are "a fraud." A letter to autograph collector Marshall E. Bean, 1965 January 4, quotes the last sentence in "The thin red line."
