Diary extracts, 1760-1800; 1916.

Vail kept a pocket memorandum book in which he briefly recorded farm transactions with his neighbors and his social and farming activities. In 1760 he also entered records of men in his company while serving under Captain Israel Horton, Colonel Woodhull, and General Amherst; he listed those soldiers who died. This collection consists of extracts from Thomas Vail's original diary (mostly in 1769) taken by Thomas's great-grandson, Henry Hobart Vail (1839-1925), who annotated the diary and provided further information in 1916. There is also a copy of line-a-day entries taken from an almanac diary for the year 1779 which was kept by an unidentified writer who apparently was an officer or agent of the government, stationed in Danbury, Connecticut and Fishkill, New York.
