Correspondence : with Franz Werfel, 1912-1938.

The first item is Wolff's response to Werfel's debut book of poems Der Weltfreund, following its publication by a rival publishing firm, and his offer to negotiate a contract with Werfel for publication of future work. Subsequent correspondence often concerns Werfel's work as an author, including the composition of works; the details of publication, such as corrections to proofs and expectations about royalties and author copies; and Werfel's lecture tours. In the period until World War I, Werfel's activities as an editor for the publishing house are also a significant focus, including the founding of the publication series "Der jüngste Tag" (Werfel's draft for a promotional flyer is included); Werfel's trip to Malcesine, Italy, with fellow editors; and his recommendations of authors for publication. The correspondence encompasses Wolff's and Werfel's military service during World War I; and the growth and relocation of Kurt Wolff Verlag from Leipzig to Munich. At one point Werfel describes to Wolff Alma Mahler's book of letters of Gustav Mahler and recommends it for publication (Gustav Mahler Briefe, 1879-1911). The item from Alma Mahler concerns aspects of Werfel's publishing relationship with Wolff. The period after Werfel had left Kurt Wolff Verlag is represented by just 3 items, all from Werfel and dated in the 1930s; in these letters Werfel in part reflects back on his time as an author with Wolff and, in 1938, communicates with Wolff about his situation as an author facing exile. Included is an unsigned (perhaps a draft) contract between Werfel and Kurt Wolff Verlag, apparently dating from 1916. For related correspondence between Werfel and Wolff in 1912 and 1913, see under: Rowohlt, Ernst, 1887-1960; and for related correspondence between Werfel and Kurt Wolff Verlag from 1914 to 1922, see under: Meyer, Georg Heinrich.
