Kurt Wolff was the founder and head of Kurt Wolff Verlag; he was Werfel's publisher from 1912 to 1923. At the time that Wolff initially negotiated with Werfel he was still a partner in Ernst Rowohlt Verlag, which Wolff and Rowohlt had founded jointly in 1908. At the beginning of 1913 Wolff assumed sole ownership of the company and renamed it Kurt Wolff Verlag. Werfel was also an editor at Wolff's publishing house from 1912 until the beginning of World War I. Meyer and Schwarz both worked at Kurt Wolff Verlag; Mardersteig was a printer and typographer employed by the company. Hasenclever was a fellow editor at Kurt Wolff Verlag and Werfel's friend. Pick was a fellow poet and Werfel's friend from Prague. Barger was the editor of the periodical Neue Jugend and the addressee of 1 letter from Werfel (enclosure in a letter to Wolff). Rudolf Werfel, Franz Werfel's father, corresponded with Kurt Wolf about or on behalf of his son between 1913 and 1919. The Wohltätigkeitsgesellschaft der Oesterreicher und Ungarn was a charitable organization to which Rudolf Werfel had promised free autographed copies of Franz Werfel's book of poems Gesänge aus den drei Reichen; the organization corresponded with Rudolf Werfel about the delivery of the books from the publishing company.
