Papers, largely military, concern the American Revolution, especially in the Hudson Valley, and include Revolutionary pledges and proceedings of local meetings against British rule, 1774-1776; orders and letters relating to the expedition against Canada, 1775-1776; order book of Gen. Burgoyne, June to October, 1777, with articles of convention between Burgoyne and Gen. H. Gates; minutes, arrest warrants, and a letter from Robert Benson relating to affairs of the Committee for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies, 1777; items relating to Claudius Smith, Orange County Tory, consisting of the confession of band member William Cole and execution orders for Smith and others, 1779; orderly books kept by Capt. Nathan Strong, Valley Forge, 1777, Gen. John Brooks at Dobb's Ferry, 1781, and Lt. Col. Josiah Harmar of the First American Regiment, 1784; military returns, payrolls, commissions, passes, warrants, discharges, and other records, 1775-1781; proceedings of a meeting of army officers concerning compensation for losses, 1792; several letters of William Denning, a commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Board, 1780-1781; and miscellaneous letters, 1775-1784, concerning appointments, election riot in Philadelphia (1775), Loan Office business, need for supplies, military news, and the life of soldiers.
