Ralph Dorn Hetzel papers, 1882-1947 (bulk 1917-1947).

The Ralph Dorn Hetzel Papers (1882-1947) consist of 5 record cartons, 15 honors and certificates, and 1 scrapbook. The collection includes correspondence and clippings, daily calendars, photographs, pamphlets and other materials covering his administrative career at New Hampshire and Penn State, 1917-1947. The bulk of the collection covers his New Hampshire and Penn State careers. Correspondence, largely personal, relates to: his work; offers of other college presidencies; and his role in the Association of College Presidents. There is some family correspondence. Scrapbooks and clippings give a fairly complete record of his public life, while his lectures and addresses present a sampling on Hetzel's public positions on higher education. Although the collection is primarily of biographical value, it does represent the life of one of the primary spokesmen for eastern land grant colleges. Correspondents include: O.M. Plummer, E.M. Hopkins, John Winant, W.J. Kerr, J. Franklin Shields, Gifford Pinchot and a number of college and university presidents. Also included are seven law books.
