Catholic Church. Apostolic Nunciature (France)

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6f24xp6 (corporateBody)

A permanent nunciature was established in 1514 by Leo X, following earlier legations. Conflict between the popes and Louis XIV left the post vacant or filled on an interim basis for most of the period from 1671 to 1690. The nuncio left France in 1791 after anticlerical legislation was passed. The office was then abolished. Several special envoys were sent to France during the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras, including a legate a latere who served from 1801 to 1810. The permanent n...

Sources differ as to when the office of the papal representatives in Spain became a permanent nunciature, with the dates 1484, 1492, and 1506 being mentioned. During the reign of Emperor Charles V (1519-1558) the affairs of the nuncios to Spain and to the Holy Roman Empire were intermingled. For most of the period from 1522 to 1544 the nuncio to Spain also served as nuncio to the empire. During the period from 1709 to 1720, which corresponded to the latter part of the War of the Spa...

Catholic Church. Congregatio Sacrorum Rituum

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6wh6rf8 (corporateBody)

This congregation was established by Sixtus V as the Congregatio pro Sacris Ritibus et Caeremoniis (constitution Immensa aeterni Dei, Jan. 22, 1588). According to some authors, it absorbed a cardinalatial commission formed by Gregory XIII, as early as 1572, to reform the ceremonies of the papal chapel. Although the principal task of the new congregation was to attend to the moderation of the Latin liturgy "in all the churches of Rome and throughout the world," the bulk of its work w...

Catholic Church. Rota Romana

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6m104ds (corporateBody)

From the earliest days of the Church judicial problems and reserved cases were referred to Rome for solution. By the end of the twelfth century this continual and ever-increasing flood of requests became too burdensome for the Consistory of Cardinals. The popes, therefore, began to refer cases to members of the papal household who were called cappellani papae. This group, which was dependent on the Apostolic Chancery (ID VATV032-A), seems to be the antecedent, if not the origin of t...

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6sn6803 (corporateBody)

The Congregation of the Holy Office was, until 1908, called the Congregatio Romanae et Universalis Inquisitionis seu Sancti Officii. The primary function of this congregation was to assist the pope in his task of preserving the integrity of the church doctrine on faith and morals, although the manner of operation has varied over the centuries. The earliest traces of the Church's concern for preserving this integrity can be found in Lucius III's constitution Ad abolendam ...

Catholic Church. Congregatio Consistorialis

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6z66mzv (corporateBody)

This congregation derives its title from the Consistory, or College of Cardinals, since its chief duty has been to prepare matters, by examination and discussion, for the Consistory. Among the congregations founded by the constitution Immensa aeterni Dei (22 Jan 1588), Sixtus V gave third place to the Congregatio pro Erectione Ecclesiarum et Provisionibus Consistorialibus. The congregation was charged with preparing the acts regarding decisions for the formal approval of...

The correspondence was carried on in the name but no longer under t...

Benedictines

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6gk072t (corporateBody)

Benedictines carry on a tradition that stems from the origin of the Christian monastic movement in the third century. St. Benedict (ca. 480-ca. 550) was born at Nursia and educated at Rome. About the year 500, the condition of contemporary society led him to withdraw to a cave at nearby Subiaco where a community gradually grew up around him. In 525 he moved with a small band of monks to Monte Cassino where he remained until his death. It was here (ca. 540) that he drew up his plan f...

The family Carpegna di Gabrielli, descended in 962 from Armileone Carpineo, obtained from the emperor Ottone the donation of twenty-four castelli in Montefeltro. In 1140 the family divided into three branches: the first of which flourished well; the second died out after three generations; the third had its origin at Montefeltro from which the dukes of Urbino descended. In 1223 Raniero and Ugo bought the castle of Miratorio and in the sixteenth century Giovanni came into possession ...

On September 27, 1540, Paul III issued the bull Regimini militantis ecclesiae, canonically establishing the Society of Jesus. The constitutions of the society were drawn up by Ignatius who submitted his work for approval in 1550. Along with working toward the spiritual benefits of its members, the aim of the order w...

Catholic Church. Dataria Apostolica

http://n2t.net/ark:/99166/w6hb5465 (corporateBody)

As early as the fourteenth century, the precise date on which the pope granted a particular favor was often a matter of crucial importance. The dating of the supplication, which could be also antedated, signaled the moment from which the grant of the grace had juridical validity. This became important if the same benefice was granted to two persons, because the earliest dated concession generally carried priority. There were other instances where a date might be important, for examp...
