The account books for this major Philadelphia sugar refiner includes two ledgers, documenting the persons and industries with whom Lovering did business, as well as his cash flow, bills receivable, sundry accounts, expenses, interest, and the wages retained. The second volume is more internal, domestic in nature. William C. and Lindley Smyth appear frequently in the ledgers; Lindley was a business partner of Lovering's.

Joseph S. Lovering began his business career as a grocer at 2nd and Pine Sts., Philadelphia. Between 1836 and 1866 Lovering operated the Sugar Refinery, one of the largest sugar refineries in the world, known for its steam process.
