Notes on powder making, gunpowder mills and saltpeter, 1788.

This collection contains several reports and notes on gunpowder, powder mills and saltpeter that Eleuthère Irénée du Pont wrote while he was a pupil of Lavoiser in France. These include: (1) "Mémoire sur la poudre" (36 pp.), dealing with the composition, utility, principles, and the manufacture of powder, with reference to the six types of powder manufactured in France; (2) "Mémoire sur la construction des moulins à poudre" (42 pp.) which deals with construction, maintenance, and specification and assembly of parts of a mill; (3)"Mémoire sur le salpêtre. This last memoir summarizes contemporary knowledge of the composition of chemical salts and technique employed by the French government in the manufacture of gunpowder. Also included are pencil notes on gunpowder manufacture taken from the published text of Louis Joseph Proust (1754-1826).

Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, the son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, was born in Paris on June 24, 1771. In 1787, he was accepted as a student in the Regis des Poudres, a government agency for the manufacture of gunpowder which was directed by Antoine Lavoisier. In 1800 Eleuthère Irénée du Pont emigrated to the United States and began investigating sites for a black powder manufactory.
