James Godson Bleak was born on November 15, 1829, in Surrey, England. Following the deaths of his parents and younger brother, Bleak joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1850 and became president of the Church's Whitechapel Branch in 1854. In 1856 he left England for Utah, and in 1861 was called by Brigham Young to join the Southern Utah Mission (later the St. George Stake). Zadok Judd and Mary Minerva Dart Judd were present during many of the foundational events of the restoration. Zadok served in the Mormon Battalion, and Zadok and Mary were Church pioneers in various settlements in southern Utah and Nevada. They eventually settled in Kanab, Utah and participated in the Kanab United Order. Zadok also served as a missionary to the Navajo and Hopi tribes with Jacob Hamblin.
