Louis Charles Bernacchi was born in Belgium in 1876. He was brought up in England and Tasmania and trained at the Melbourne Observatory, Australia where he studied astronomy, magnetism, meteorology and physics. Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink was born in Oslo, Norway, on December 1, 1864, the son of a Norwegian father and an English mother.
