Tamara Jernigan was born May 7, 1959, in Chattanooga, TN. She received degrees from Stanford University (BS, 1981; MS 1983), University of California, Berkeley (MA, 1985) and Rice University (PhD, 1988). Jernigan began working at NASA as a research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center from June 1981 until July 1985; she became an astronaut in 1986.
