Jernigan, Tamara Elizabeth, 1959-
Variant namesTamara Jernigan was born May 7, 1959, in Chattanooga, TN. She received degrees from Stanford University (BS, 1981; MS 1983), University of California, Berkeley (MA, 1985) and Rice University (PhD, 1988). Jernigan began working at NASA as a research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center from June 1981 until July 1985; she became an astronaut in 1986. She flew on five Space Shuttle program missions and logged 1512 hours in space. After retiring from NASA in 2001, Jernigan has been working as Assistant Associate Director for Physics and Advanced Technologies at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She is married to fellow astronaut Peter Wisoff.
