A native New Yorker, originally trained as a photographer for the U.S. Merchant Marines, Avedon is best known for his work as a fashion photographer for such magazines as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Look, and Life; his project "The West" for the Amon Carter Museum; and his portraits of various celebrities.
