Born in Lynchburg, Va., attended Virginia Military Institute, B.A. from Randolph-Macon College and M.A from Harvard; during World War I, served in military intelligence and as liaison officer with French and British; during interwar years worked in the Soviet Union with the American Relief Administration and entered the US Foreign Service; during his long career with the Foreign Service he was stationed primarily in the Middle East; after retirement amassed a large collection of materials and prepared much scholarly work on Gioacomo Casanova; author of numerous books and articles on his career, foreign service matters, and Casanova; also served on Board of Trustees and as scholar-in-residence at Randolph-Macon College.
