Episcopal Theological School was founded in 1867 by Boston businessman Benjamin Tyler Reed. The early trustees were dedicated to the welfare of the school, both with financial and administrative support. The school taught Biblical criticism twenty years before other seminaries, accepted students of other denominations, hired a female faculty member (1941), admitted female students beginning in 1958, and was considered very liberal by the church hierarchy. In 1974 the Philadelphia Divinity School moved to Cambridge and merged with Episcopal Theological School to become Episcopal Divinity School.
