Bellinger, John, 1804-1860
John Bellinger was born in Colleton District, South Carolina on September 24, 1804. He studied medicine under Dr. Edward North in Charleston and attended lectures at the newly established Medical College of South Carolina. He finished his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania from which he graduated in 1826. He returned to Charleston and set up a general practice in medicine. In 1848 he assumed the chair of surgery at the Medical College which position he yielded to Samuel Henry Dickson in 1850. He continued to practice medicine until he died in Charleston of pulmonary tuberculosis on August 13, 1860.
