Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892) of New York, N.Y., was an architect and draftsman who was actively engaged in the design of public buildings and stores for nearly 60 years. Among his works were the Capitol at Raleigh, N.C., several buildings at the University of North Carolina (Smith Hall) and at the Virginia Military Institute. He was contracted to design the Chambers Building at Davidson College, N.C., built through a legacy from Maxwell Chambers (died 1855) and named for him. The building was constructed in 1858-1859, first used in January 1860, destroyed by fire in 1921, and later reconstructed. During renovation of the reconstructed building the original drawings were lost.

Davis worked on Montgomery Place, including later alterations, over a period of many years. The house was built chiefly from 1843 to 1867.

A.J. Davis worked first as a lithographer and then as an architect. In tandem with Ithiel Town, he designed a remarkable number of buildings, public structures (hospitals, school buildings, churches, museums, state capitols) and private dwellings alike. Davis embarked on a solo career in 1843, continuing in practice alone for more than 30 years. At one point in his life, Davis claimed to have designed the most buildings of any living American architect. He is best known for Gothic revival designs.

Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892), the American architect, started working as a draftsman for Josiah C. Brady and Ithiel Town in New York City. He became Town's partner in 1829 and they collaborated on public structures, including the New York Customs House (1832) and various state capitols. When Davis went into business on his own, he continued to design public buildings but concentrated on designs for large country and suburban houses.
