Brown, Charles E., 1948-
Variant namesColonel (COL) Charles E. Brown registered for the draft on 16 October 1940 and was assigned deferred student status. On 13 May 1941, he was drafted and declared 4-F. He applied for reclassification, was assigned 1-A and enlisted on 4 August 1941 at Ft. Hayes, OH. He underwent basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC and then was assigned to C Battery, 118th Field Artillery Battalion of the 301st Infantry Division at Ft. Jackson, SC. In April 1942, he entered Class 20 of the Field Artillery Officers Candidate School at Ft. Sill, OK, and was commissioned on 1 July 1942. He then was assigned to the 91st Infantry Division, 346th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp White, OR. He activated with the 91st on 15 August 1942 and began cadre training at Camp Adair, OR. On 24 March 1944, he proceeded to Camp Patrick Henry for embarkation on 1 April on the SS James Moore for Oran, North Africa. On 25 April 1944, the 91st was assigned to the Invasion Training Center and remained there until they embarked for Naples, landing on 19 June 1944. He fought in the Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and the Po Valley Campaigns. After Victory in Europe (VE) Day, he participated in the occupation of North-East Italy along the Isonzo River, leaving on 31 August 1945 from Naples sailing for Boston. He separated from active service at Camp Rucker, AL on 22 January 1946 and entered the reserves where he remained until retirement in 1971, serving as assistant Commandant and Commandant of the 2087th United States Army Reserve School among other assignments. He went to Michigan Law School on the GI Bill.
