Hartwell, Jesse Boardman, 1835-1912.

Southern Baptist missionary in northern China from 1858-1875 and from 1889-1912. From 1875 to 1889, Hartwell worked with the Chinese in California as Superintendent of Baptist Missions in San Francisco, and organized the first Chinese Baptist church in the United States. Hartwell also served as president of the Bush Theological Seminary, later North China Baptist College, in Hwanghsien.
