Born August 1, 1901, in Vienna, Austria; came to United States in 1938; son of Julius (a professor) and Helen (Donath) Werner; married Elizabeth Mendelssohn, July, 1932. Education: Studied at Universities of Graz, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Goettingen, and Strasbourg, receiving Ph.D., 1928; also studied at conservatories and academies of music in Vienna and Berlin. Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, New York, N.Y., 1938-1967, professor of musicology and comparative liturgy and head of graduate department; Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel, chairman of department of musicology, 1966-71. Visiting professor at other universities.
