Pitkin did graduate work at the Sorbonne, University of Berlin, etc. and several of these letters are from this period. On the Faculty at Columbia as lecturer in psychology, 1905-1909, professor of journalism, 1912-1943, on the editorial staff of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and New York Tribune and other papers, he was also the author of a number of books.
