Indiana school teacher and lawyer, served in the Indiana Legislature and the U.S. House and Senate. Appointed to the Indiana 5th Circuit Court by Andrew Johnson. During President Hayes' administration, Thompson served as Secretary of the Navy and after that as head of the French Panama Canal Project until he retired to Indiana.

William M. Thompson was the father of Richard W. Thompson. Richard Thompson had an active career in Indiana and national politics, serving as the state legislator from Lawrence Co. (1834-1838); provost marshal of the Terre Haute District (1861-1865); a delegate to the Whig and Republican national convention; chairman of the Know-Nothing state convention (1856); and U.S. Secretary of the Navy (1877-1880).
