Virginia born Indiana lawyer, politician, and author who served in the Indiana legislature, 1834-1838, the U.S. Senate, 1840-1852, and briefly as Rutherford Hayes' secretary of the navy.
Indiana school teacher and lawyer, served in the Indiana Legislature and the U.S. House and Senate. Appointed to the Indiana 5th Circuit Court by Andrew Johnson. During President Hayes' administration, Thompson served as Secretary of the Navy and after that as head of the French Panama Canal Project until he retired to Indiana.
United States Representative from Indiana, 1841-1843, 1847-1849; 27th United States Secretary of the Navy, 1877-1880.
