Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV (b. August 23, 1883, Walla Walla, WA–d. September 2, 1953, San Antonio, TX) was a career American army officer and the Commander of Allied forces in the Philippines at the time of their surrender to the Empire of Japan during World War II. The son of Army officer during Spanish-American War Robert Powell Page Wainwright and grandson of Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright II, Lieutenant in Civil War, he attended West Point. Wainwright was promoted to major during World War I. During World War II, he was made a major general and commander of Philippine Department. He surrendered to the Japanese in 1942 and taken prisoner of war before being liberated by the Red Army, 1945. For his courageous leadership during the fall of the Philippines, Wainwright received the medal of honor. He was promoted to four star general after the war.
