Samuel Mast graduated from Michigan State Normal College and received a B.S. degree from the University of Michigan in 1899. In 1906 he earned a Ph. D. from Harvard University. He was a professor of biology (1899-1908) at Hope College before joining the faculty of Johns Hopkins University in 1911. Mast is well known for his discovery of a unicellular organism, Chilomona Paramecium, which was used in cancer research in the 1940s.

Biographical Note: Samuel Ottmar Mast was born in 1871. After receiving degrees at Univ. of Michigan and Harvard he joined the Zoology faculty at Hopkins in 1907. He retired in 1941.

The physiology of lower invertebrates was his research speciality. Mast died on February 3, 1947; survived by his wife, Grace Rebecca Tennent, and three daughters.
