Frank Applegate was an author, artist (painter and sculptor), and scholar. His works include Indian Stories from the Pueblos (1929), Native tales of New Mexico (completed by Mary Austin in 1932), and an unpublished manuscript on Spanish colonial arts. Frank Guy Applegate was born in Atlanta, Illinois, February 8, 1881 and died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, February 12, 1931.* He attended the University of Illinois (B.A., 1906), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia, Pa.), the Academy Julien (Paris, France). He taught sculpture and ceramics at the School of Industrial Arts (Trenton, New Jersey, 1907-1921). In 1908, Applegate married Alta Bertha Chenoweth. They had one daughter, Ruth Elizabeth "Betty," born in 1911.
