Byberry Preparative Meeting (Society of Friends)

In 1816, some residents in the northern part of Byberry became dissatisfied with the school at the meeting houss and wanted a school in a more convenient location. A schoolhouse was built on land which James Walton and Mardon Wilson had been willing to sell for that purpose. The School was placed under the care of Byberry Preparative Meeting and trustees were appointed annually by the Meeting to have charge of it. This school became known as the "Walnut Hill" school because its yard was a few feet higher than the road and had several walnut trees. The school was discontinued in 1847 after the new school house was erected in Byberry by the Controller of Public Schools. A meeting for worship was established at Poetquesink [Byberry] in 1683 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting; it was attached to Abington Monthly Meeting along with Tacony [Frankford] meeting. Byberry Preparative Meeting was established ca. 1701. The meeting for worship and preparative meeting were transferred to Horsham Monthly Meeting in 1782 and then to Byberry Monthly Meeting in 1810. After the schism of 1827/28, Byberry Preparative Meeting (Orthodox) was discontinued in 1828; the Hicksite preparative meeting was discontinued in 1920.
