Byberry School Association was formed in 1837 by several Friends, mostly members of Byberry Meeting, for the purpose of raising stock to buy land and erect a secondary boarding school in Byberry. John P. Townsend, James Thornton, James Bonner, Josiah Walton and Joshua Gilbert were chosen managers in accordance with the association's constitution. After a few years of operation, the school failed, and in 1843, the company sold the property at public sale to James Thornton.
