Edward Tuckerman (1775-1843) was a prosperous dry-goods importer in Boston, Mass., in partnership with Samuel Rogers ( - ). In 1821, the partnership was expanded to include Thomas Parkman Cushing (1787-1854), who had joined the firm as its agent in England. Tuckerman received his mercantile training in the counting-house of Samuel and Stephen Salisbury, the latter of whom had married his sister, Elizabeth Tuckerman (1768-1851). Tuckerman was also a founder of the Provident Institute for Savings (New England's first savings bank), director of the Massachusetts Bank, and an active member of various historical and religious societies. He married first, Hannah Parkman (1777-1814), and second, Sophia May (1784-1870), and was the father of Edward Tuckerman (1817-1886), a notable botanist.
