The League of Nations Association was a national organization with semi-autonomous branches in various parts of the country. The association supported revision of the League Covenant and American membership. It waged an educational campaign to inform Americans of the League's activities and accomplishments and generally tried to foster international cooperation, both politically and economically.

The Mid-West branch, with headquarters in Chicago, included Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota and Nebraska. The correspondence and related documents cover the period 1936-1942, under the directorships of Walter H.C. Laves, 1936-1939, William Diez, 1939-1941, Lucy McCoy, 1941, and John Van de Water, 1941-1942. The principal financial supporter of the Mid-West branch and secretary of the Executive Committee was Mrs. Emmons McCormick Blaine, a prominent Chicago philanthropist.
