Elisabeth Mann Borgese, youngest daughter of the German author Thomas Mann, was a founding member of the environmental organization The Club of Rome. Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, an Italian-American author and a political philosopher, was born near Palermo, Italy, and immigrated to the United States in 1931. He taught at Smith (1932-1935) and at the University of Chicago (from 1936). His works include the novels RUBÉ (1921), GOLIATH: THE MARCH OF FASCISM (1937), and COMMON CAUSE (1943).

Elisabeth Mann Borgese was born in Munich, Germany in 1918, to parents Katia Pringsheim and Nobel Prize winning writer, Thomas Mann. The fifth of six children, Elisabeth was born into an intellectual family whose views supported the post-war movement for World Federalism. While in exile from Nazi Germany, Elisabeth earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classical studies and a diploma from the Conservatory of music in Zurich, Switzerland before her family immigrated to the United States in 1938. The following year, Elisabeth married Giuseppe Antionio Borgese, an Italian professor and author then employed by Princeton University with whom she had two children, Domenica and Angelica.
