Henry Clay (1777-1852) served as member of the House and as Speaker of the Kentucky legislature, served several terms in the United States House of Representatives, including Speaker and several terms in the United States Senate (1806-1807, 1810-1811, 1831-1842, 1849-1852). Clay served as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams and also served as one of the peace commissioners to end the War of 1812, resulting in the Treaty of Ghent (1814). Henry Clay ran for President in 1824, 1832, and 1844. He helped draft the Compromise of 1850 and coined the once famous phrase, ʺIʹd rather be right than President.ʺ Henry Clay is buried in the Lexington Cemetery.
