George Gissing was a talented Victorian author and bibliophile, perhaps best known for his bitterly realistic novels of the lower classes. Born in Yorkshire, he excelled at academics, and won a scholarship to Owens College where he was an award-winning student. He became enamored with Nell Harrison, a girl of the street, and resorted to stealing money to support her; he was caught, served one month hard labor, and was deported to America for a time. He earned a meager living writing short stories before returning to England, and worked as a tutor while building his career as a novelist. A prolific and skilled writer, he produced essays and short fiction, but is probably best remembered as a novelist; influenced by his experiences and interest in the lower classes, his realistic style helped bridge the gap between Victorian melodrama and modernism. Gissing was also an intense reader and a notable book lover.
