Company originally opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on April 26, 1970, and ran until Jan. 1, 1972.

In Nov. 1999 a staged reading of an earlier version of this material was presented at New York Theatre Workshop under the title Wise guys, featuring Nathan Lane and Victor Garber. The title Gold! had originally been proposed for that production but was discarded. In the fall of 2003 a revised version, retitled Bounce, was staged at Goodman Theatre in Chicago and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Stephen Joshua Sondheim (1930- ) is an award-winning American composer and lyricist for stage and film. His awards include an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (including one for Lifetime Achievement), multiple Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and the Laurence Olivier Award. Among his most well-known works are A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, West Side Story, and Gypsy .

Sondheim was president of the Dramatists Guild from 1973-1981 and, on his 80th birthday, the Henry Miller's Theater was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theater in his honor.
