History notes:

The Metropolitan Opera was formed when, in 1873, the Italian opera at the Academy of Music moved into the Metropolitan Opera House. The old theatre was too small, with too few box seats. In 1966, the Met joined with other New York performing groups to develop the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Each year, the Metropolitan Opera performs over 200 operas in New York City.
