British music critic and musicologist.

Newman, born William Roberts, was chief music critic for several British newspapers including the Manchester Guardian (1905-06), Birmingham Daily Post (1906-18) and the Sunday Times of London (1920-58). He was the author of many books on musical topics but is best known for his biographies of Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt.
