History notes:

The Archives nationales (National Archives) of France began in 1790 during the French Revolution. A state decree of 1794 mandated that all pre-French Revolution archives, both private and public, that were seized by revolutionaries be centralized. Through a law passed in 1796 creating department archives, the Archives nationales was created.
